Why wool
The fibre that learns your room
Wool is a protein fibre — the same family as silk and human hair — which means it has a natural resilience that synthetic yarns cannot replicate. Crush it, and it springs back. Spill on it, and the lanolin sheds the liquid before it penetrates. Walk on it for a decade, and the surface develops a patina rather than a bald patch. It absorbs sound, regulates humidity, and resists flame without chemical treatment. Every rug we make begins with this fibre because nothing else performs the way it does underfoot, year after year.
Where it comes from
Source and grade
We use New Zealand wool for most collections — it grows longer, whiter, and with a more consistent crimp than wool from warmer climates, which means it takes dye cleanly and produces a pile with visible depth. For specific constructions, we blend in Indian Ghazni wool or semi-worsted highland yarns that add bulk or texture. The grade is selected per design: softer merino-cross for plush high-pile surfaces, coarser crossbred for flatweaves and looped constructions where durability matters more than softness. The fibre choice is the first design decision, not an afterthought.

Spin
How the twist changes everything
The same wool spun differently produces a completely different surface. A tight Z-twist creates a firm, defined pile that catches light sharply — it reads as crisp and structured. A loose S-twist yields a softer, more organic surface where the fibres bloom outward and the light diffuses. We specify the spin direction, the number of plies, and the twist-per-inch for every design. Two rugs from the same wool lot, spun differently, will feel like different materials underfoot.
Blend engineering
Why we mix fibres
Some designs call for a single-origin yarn. Others need a blend — wool with linen for structure, wool with viscose for sheen, wool with cotton for a flatter, cooler hand. Each blend has a ratio, and the ratio is the design. An 80/20 wool-viscose blend reflects light on the carved sections while the all-wool ground absorbs it, creating a pattern that shifts as you move around the room. Blending is not a cost measure. It is a texture tool.
Dyeing
Colour at the yarn stage
We dye most yarn before it reaches the loom — hank-dyed in open vats with reactive dyes that bond to the protein structure of the fibre, not just coat it. This is why the colour survives washing, sunlight, and years of foot traffic. Some collections use space-dyed yarn — a single hank dipped into two or three tones so the finished surface carries deliberate colour variation without a printed pattern. The wash after weaving shifts these tones further, which is why no two rugs from the same dye lot are identical.

Hand-knotted
Individual knots, tied by hand
A hand-knotted rug has individual knots tied around the warp threads, row by row, then beaten down with a comb. That is why the pile stands up, catches light directionally, and develops character over years instead of flattening. Our knotted rugs range from 40 to 100 knots per square inch depending on the design — higher density for fine detail, lower for bold textures where the yarn needs room to express itself. A 5×8 at 60 knots per square inch contains roughly 350,000 individual knots, each tied by hand. There is no shortcut.
Hand-woven
Warp and weft, no pile
A handwoven rug interlaces warp and weft threads without a pile — the structure is the surface. This produces a thinner, reversible rug with a different kind of beauty: the pattern reads as graphic rather than textural, the hand feels cool and firm, and the surface lies flat against the floor without a pad. We weave dhurries, kilims, and structured flatweaves, each with a different interlacing technique that changes the drape, the weight, and the way the yarn catches light.
Looped
The loop and the cut
Looped constructions — hand-tufted on a stretched canvas — create surfaces where the yarn forms uncut loops, cut pile, or a combination of both. The contrast between a sheared area and a looped area is what produces the carved, dimensional textures you see in our Deep Pile and Craft Loop collections. The pile height, loop height, and the angle of the cut are all specified per design. This is where we get the most dramatic play of light and shadow on the surface.
The Wash
Why we wash
The surface is made twice
Every rug comes off the loom looking like a different object than the one that arrives in your room. The wash is what transforms it. We wash every piece at least twice — once to remove the sizing and the loom tension, which lets the fibres relax and bloom, and once to soften the surface and settle the colour. Some designs get a third wash with a stone or enzyme treatment that ages the surface intentionally, producing the lived-in depth that new rugs rarely have. The wash is not cleanup. It is finishing.
What the wash does to colour
Colour is coaxed, not printed
The wash shifts the dyed colour in ways that cannot be predicted exactly — a deep indigo relaxes into a softer blue-grey, a warm ivory develops amber undertones, a charcoal opens up to reveal the brown beneath the black. This is why we say the colour is coaxed rather than applied. The result is a surface with the kind of tonal variation that flat-dyed or printed rugs cannot achieve. Two rugs from the same dye lot will share a family resemblance but not be identical, and that variation is the point.
Edges & Finishing
The selvage
Bound into the structure, not glued on
The edge of a hand-knotted rug is where the warp threads are secured — either overcast by hand with matching wool, or bound in a flat tape that integrates with the body of the rug. We do not glue or serge edges after the fact. The binding is part of the weaving process, done on the loom, which means it cannot separate from the rug because it is the rug. This is the detail that separates a hand-finished piece from a machine-cut one, and it is the first thing a designer checks.
Fringe
Structural, not decorative
The fringe on a hand-knotted rug is the exposed warp — the foundation threads that run the length of the piece. It is not attached afterward; it is the skeleton of the rug, visible. We offer natural fringe (the raw cotton warp left as-is), trimmed fringe (cut short and secured), or concealed fringe (folded under and stitched). The choice is functional as much as aesthetic — a dining room rug benefits from concealed fringe that chairs won't catch, while a living room piece can carry a longer fringe that signals its construction.

How we control colour
From Pantone to pile
Every colourway starts as a reference — a Pantone chip, a paint swatch, a photograph of a room. The master dyer creates a lab dip: a small sample of yarn dyed to match the reference under controlled light. That sample is approved, and only then does the full yarn lot get dyed. But dyed yarn in a hank looks different from dyed yarn tied in knots, which looks different again after washing. The master dyer accounts for all three stages when mixing the dye bath. The colour you approve is the colour after the wash, not before it.
Living colour
Why the rug looks different every hour
A wool rug is not a flat colour field. The pile has a nap — a direction in which the fibres lean — and that direction changes how light reflects off the surface. Walk around a wool rug and you will see it shift from dark to light and back as your angle to the pile changes. Morning sun, afternoon side-light, and evening lamp-glow each reveal a different version of the same colour. This is what we call living texture, and it is the single quality that separates a handmade wool surface from everything else on the floor.

Daily care
Less than you think
Vacuum regularly — that is the whole routine. Use a suction-only setting (no beater bar) and vacuum in the direction of the pile. A new wool rug will shed loose fibres for the first few weeks; this is not damage, it is the surface settling. The shedding stops. Rotate the rug 180° every six months so foot traffic and sunlight age the surface evenly. Beyond that, wool takes care of itself — the lanolin in the fibre naturally resists soiling, and the crimp structure springs back from compression overnight.
Spills and stains
Blot, never rub
Wool gives you time. The fibre's natural oils repel liquid for the first few minutes, so a spill sits on the surface rather than soaking in immediately. Blot with a clean cloth — white, so you can see what you are lifting — working from the edge of the spill inward. Never rub; rubbing pushes the liquid deeper and can distort the pile. For anything beyond water or wine, have the rug professionally cleaned by a specialist who works with wool. A good hand-knotted rug is an investment measured in decades, and it earns professional attention when it needs it.
Ageing
Better with time
A wool rug does not degrade with use — it matures. The pile softens, the colours deepen slightly, and the surface develops a lustre that new rugs do not have. This is why antique hand-knotted rugs are more valuable than new ones of the same quality: the material gets better. Your rug will look its best not the day it arrives, but five or ten years later, after the wool has settled into your room, your light, and your life. That is the promise of the material.
